Around 200 spectators from all walks of life in Chongqing's Shapingba district watched a live broadcast of V-Day commemorations at a cinema on Wednesday morning to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.

Eight cinemas across the municipality offered public viewings as a massive military parade was staged in Tian'anmen Square in Beijing.

During World War II, Chongqing served as the wartime capital of the Chinese government and as a military command center.

"It is such a special experience to watch the parade on a giant screen in a cinema with other people," said Zhou Yunxiang, 35, a business owner.

"I was so proud watching the parade. Our country has become much stronger, so the humiliating history will not be repeated."

Everyone stood and sang the national anthem together when the music started in the live broadcast.

Zhou said he will learn from the spirit of past heroes and face the challenges of life bravely.

Yang Tao, 37, who retired from the army in 2020, said he was excited to see the great achievements of modernization in recent years. He works at the Shapingba district's veterans affairs bureau.

"I will work harder to provide better services for the veterans so that our service members can focus on their work without any worries," he said.
