Libyan leader Muammar Gadhafi's rule is crumbling after over four decades in power, after the rebel troops took control of much of the capital Tripoli on Sunday night and his son Saif al-Islam has been detained.
The UN Security Council unanimously adopted Friday a resolution on the establishment of a UN support mission for Libya with an initial period of three months and easing some sanctions on the country.
The French and British leaders will visit Libya on Thursday to congratulate the new rulers they helped install.
Libya's Muammar Gadhafi said in an audio message aired by Syria's Arrai TV Thursday that reports about his fleeing to Niger were lies and that the rebels and NATO would be defeated.
Libyan rebel forces are seeking a peaceful handover of the town of Bani Walid, one of a few strongholds still held by Muammar Gadhafi's loyalists, and have reportedly clinched a deal.
