TOKYO - Death toll from Typhoon Roke reached 11 in Japan, with five people remaining missing, Japanese media said Thursday.

The strong typhoon raised concerns for landslides in many areas in the country, prompting Japan Meteorological Agency to call for extreme vigilance, Kyodo News said.

Roke made landfall near Hamamatsu, central Japan, at around 2 pm Wednesday, and was moving northeast across Honshu, the meteorological agency said.

On Thursday, the typhoon was located some 200 kilometers east- northeast of Nemuro, Hokkaido, and moving northeastward at a speed of 60 kilometers per hour, packing winds of up to 180 kph, according to the agency. It is forecast to weaken into an extratropical cyclone later in the day.

Yamagata Shinkansen bullet train services were halted Thursday morning between Fukushima and Shinjo stations due to heavy rains.

Some 5,000 people were stranded overnight in passenger cars of Shinkansen bullet trains at Tokyo and Shizuoka stations Wednesday, Kyodo said.
