Cyclone causes $4m loss to fishery in Bangladesh(Xinhua)
Updated: 2007-11-22 16:59 DHAKA -- Fishery in eight districts of Bangladesh's southeastern Chittagong division has incurred a loss of over 340 million taka (about 4.86 million US dollars) due to heavy rain caused by the recent cyclone, according to private news agency UNB Thursday. According to the Chittagong divisional office in eastern Comilla district, fishery sectors in Comilla, Chandpur, Brahmanbaria, Feni, Lakshipur, Rangamati, Khagrachhari and Bandarban districts were badly affected. The cyclone damaged structures of 45,559 water bodies on 154, 000 acres (about 62,370 hectares) in eight districts worth 31.8 million taka (about 454,000 US dollars), the private news agency said. The sources said approximately 6.3 million kg of fish worth 251 million taka (about 3.6 million US dollars) and 4,460 kg of shrimp worth 809,000 taka (about 11557 US dollars) were washed away in these districts. Huge fish fries were also washed away incurring a loss of about 62.7 million taka (about 896,000 US dollars). The cyclone Sidr mainly hit Bangladesh's coastal districts in the south and southwestern region last Thursday night. Hundreds of shrimp production fields in the southern and southwestern coastal areas were washed away by the cyclone. |
