Tan Xue miraculously defeated the two-time Azerbaijan world champion Emma Eva at the 2002 Lisbon World Fencing Championships held in Portugal, and became China’s first fencing world champion. Many expected the quickly-rising star to succeed during the first battle, as she is one of China’s gold-medal hopefuls.
