Draft proposal on cinema tickets

BEIJING — There should be a minimum price for discounted film tickets, according to a draft proposal by the Film Administration under the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television.

Discounted tickets, mostly purchased by groups, theater members or through sales promotions arranged by cinemas, should not be lower than 70 percent of the listed price, it said.

The recommendation is intended to standardize ticketing management in the film market, the administration said.

However, many people are not in favor of a limit on discounted ticket prices.

Wu Jian, a 25-year-old Beijing resident who goes to the cinema most weekends, said he might consider going to the cinema on fewer occasions if the ticket price is raised.

"We usually purchase tickets in a group to get a cheaper price — 25 yuan ($4) on average," said Wu. "We might still go to the cinema if film tickets are no longer this cheap, but it might not be as frequent."

The draft, which is still under discussion, also raised the issue of bundling sales of film tickets with products such as popcorn and beverages, which is strictly prohibited.

The administration set a price ceiling for tickets for 3D films, giant screen films and VIP halls, saying it should be at most 150 percent of the highest price of the same film in an ordinary cinema.
