Scenic spots receive more tourists

BEIJING - Scenic spots across China received more tourists on Thursday, the fifth day of the week-long Spring Festival holiday, compared to the corresponding period of last year, data from the National Holiday Tourism Office showed.

On the day, about 251,300 tourists visited 37 major scenic resorts in northern Shanxi Province, up 20.33 percent year-on-year, the office said on Thursday.

Chengdu, capital city of southwestern Sichuan Province, also reported surging tourists during the day. Sightseers to the city's Pingle Ancient Town increased 22.5 percent year-on-year to 98,000, while 10,580 tourists visited the resort of Mount Qingcheng, an increase of 54.41 percent.

The number of tourists rose 28.5 percent year-on-year to 1.21 million in southwestern Guizhou Province on the day, compared with a total of 1.65 million visitors during the holiday's first four days, the office said.

Further, Kunming, capital of southwestern Yunnan Province, accommodated 441,100 visitors on the fifth day, an increase of 39.18 percent from a year earlier, it said.

Meanwhile, about 774,600 passengers made plane trips on Wednesday, and 4.48 million travelled by railways on the day, the office added.

The Spring Festival, or Chinese Lunar New Year, falls on January 23 this year.
