Construction begins on Dawan Township Protection Project in Guangdong
Construction began on Monday on the Dawan Township Protection Project, the final main task in the creation of the Huangmaoxia Reservoir in Qingyuan city, Guangdong province.
A statement released by the Guangdong Provincial Department of Water Conservancy on Tuesday said the progress demonstrates that flood control on this portion of the Beijiang River Basin is fully implemented and will play a role in water transportation and irrigation in northern Guangdong in the months to come.
The Dawan township project reaches a total protected area of about 10.6 square kilometers. It was built over 56 months with an investment of 2.4 billion yuan ($347.83 million).
The project's scope includes levees, dry gates, drainage pumping stations, storage regulating forebays, and flood interception canals, forming an integrated flood control system, said the statement.
Upon completion, the project will operate in joint dispatch and control with the Huangmaoxia Reservoir hub water conservancy project to provide resistance to flood impacts and resolve waterlogging disasters. It will effectively protect 5.33 square kilometers of farmland in Dawan township and safeguard the lives and properties of approximately 40,000 residents.
Upon completion, the Huangmaoxia Reservoir project will further improve the flood control system in the middle and lower reaches of the Beijiang River, one of the main tributaries of the Pearl River, and alleviate flood control pressure on Guangzhou, Foshan, and other Greater Bay Area cities, the statement said.
Meanwhile, it is expected to generate an annual average of 121 million kWh of green electricity, allow larger ships to travel to the inland areas of the Lianjiang River, and supply irrigation water for 37.33 square kilometers of farmland in Yingde, a county-level city in Qingyuan, it added.
