Four killed in expressway tunnel blast in Chongqing
On Tuesday, the Chongqing Wanzhou Transportation Committee reported a suspected combustible gas explosion at an expressway tunnel in Chongqing, which resulted in four fatalities.
According to the report, the incident occurred on Monday at approximately 3:10 pm in the left passage of the Tiefengshan Tunnel, which sits on the G5012 Enshi–Guangyuan Expressway. The tunnel is funded by Chongqing Wankaida Expressway and constructed by China Railway 12th Bureau Group.
Initially, the explosion left one person missing and 12 others injured. Emergency rescue and medical efforts were immediately initiated. By midnight on Tuesday, the missing individual was located but confirmed deceased. Three of the victims later succumbed to their injuries despite medical intervention.
Search and rescue operations at the site have concluded, and the construction site has been sealed off. Post-incident management is underway, and an investigation into the cause of the accident has been launched.
