Wuyi University in Jiangmen, a city in the western part of the Pearl River Delta, Guangdong province, officially inaugurated Chenpi School last Wednesday to further promote the local chenpi, or dried tangerine peel, industry.

As an important research base serving local distinctive industries, the school will draw on the university's strong research capabilities and talent advantages in biomedicine, health, and other fields to carry out scientific research, a statement released by the university said.

By closely aligning with the development needs of the Xinhui chenpi industry, it will continue to make concerted efforts in talent cultivation, key research breakthroughs, and technology commercialization to provide solid talent and technical support for the high-quality development of the industry, it said.

It is the first school of its kind that has been established by a university to serve the specialty agricultural industry in the country.

Chenpi, produced in Jiangmen's Xinhui district, enjoys nationwide fame and serves as a unique cultural symbol of the Lingnan (South China) region.

Chenpi is effective in eliminating phlegm and stopping cough, and its effect gets better with age.

For generations, residents have used chenpi in various ways, from steeping it in water to incorporating it into soups, cuisines, congee, and candied fruits.
