This past weekend, the Chongqing Garden Expo became the dazzling stage for the largest water lantern festival in western China. Open to the public until March 22, the event promises an immersive cultural experience celebrating the Chinese New Year with an exciting display of light and festivities.

Covering an area of roughly 10 city blocks, it is currently the largest festival in the region. A 2.8-kilometer light corridor along the lake connects six thematic zones, each offering a unique experience.

The festival showcases approximately 2,000 large lantern installations and over 7,000 hanging lanterns, highlighted by 15 large-scale lantern sets that showcase exceptional artistry and craftsmanship. It spans several cultural and festive occasions, including Spring Festival, Lantern Festival, International Women's Day, and Longtaitou Festival (Dragon-Head-Raising Festival).

"The lantern festival seamlessly blends local traditional New Year customs with modern light and shadow technology," said a representative of Chongqing Daily News Group, one of the event's sponsors. "It not only rekindles the deep-rooted memories of reunion among Chongqing residents but also breathes new life into traditional folk customs through innovative forms. This effort supports the enhancement of Chongqing's cultural and tourism brand."
