Lu Ying-chu, from Taipei and a student at Minzu University of China, reviewed Taiwan's history under Japanese colonial rule following the Treaty of Shimonoseki. "The treaty separated Taiwan from the motherland, which deeply saddened the people," Lu said, adding that "this shared memory should never be forgotten, and it reminds our generation to cherish peace and unity."
