Project based on nuclear power plant benefits residents of Haiyang, Shandong
A nuclear power plant in East China's Haiyang city began providing heating for 4,500,000 square meters of residential area on Nov 9, making Haiyang the country's first zero-carbon heating city with nuclear energy.
Over 200,000 residents here have received heating generated by nuclear power for the winter.
The Haiyang Nuclear Power Unit 1 has replaced 12 coal-fired boilers, reducing CO2 emissions by 180,000 tons.
Meanwhile, residential heating fees have been lowered by one yuan ($0.16) per square meter, helping Haiyang residents save money.
