Chichén Itzá

Chichén Itzá, situated in south-central Yucatán State, Mexico, is a ruined ancient Maya city. The site, 3 kilometers long and 2 kilometers wide, occupies an area of 10 square km.

The Maya name "Chichen Itza" means "At the mouth of the well of the Itza", as the city was built on a natural well that now is divided by a road.

With several hundred ancient buildings, Chichén Itzá is a renowned archeological site of Maya and Toltec cultures.

The southern part of the site is the old Chichén area, which is believed to have been built between the seventh and 10th centuries. The buildings in this area feature stone carvings on their facades, as demonstrated by the pyramid temples, palaces, markets, a ball court and an observatory in it. The new Itzá area in the north is dominated by gray structures that are representative of the Toltec style, which feature plain lines and stucco sculpture.
