Maeshowe

Maeshowe is a Neolithic chambered cairn and passage tomb built some 5,000 years ago. Situated in Scotland's Orkney Islands on Mainland Orkney, and 7.3 meters high, it looks like a hill covered in piles of hay.

The entire interior was built from carefully crafted slabs of flagstone and each of its entrances is in a symmetrically rectangular shape. Moreover, the grave is honeycombed with a labyrinth of passages and chambers. Incredibly, the entrance passage to Maeshowe is aligned with the setting of the midwinter sun, so that the light illuminates the tomb's interior.
