7 killed in Egypt's Tuesday clashes

Xinhua | Updated: 2013-07-03 05:58

CAIRO - Seven people were killed and 72 others injured on Tuesday in clashes between Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi's opponents and proponents in Giza governorate, southwest of Cairo, a Health Ministry spokesperson told Xinhua, as the day's total injuries across Egypt rose to over 180.

In the coastal city of Alexandria, hundreds of Morsi's supporters on Tuesday blocked the streets, provoking the anger of car owners and anti-Morsi citizens. Gunshots were heard in the confrontations, leaving 25 injured.

Elsewhere, in the Delta cities of Benha and Mansoura, throngs of Morsi's supporters also flooded the streets.

No injuries were reported from the Tahrir Square, Ittihadiya and Qobba, where Morsi's opponents were gathering in Cairo.

Over the past week, at least 31 people were killed and over 1, 400 injured in clashes across Egypt due to the bitter political division.

As the Islamists called for preserving the legitimacy of Morsi, and claimed the military's 48-hour ultimatum for coming up with a solution to the crisis as a military coup, the opposition and liberals demanded Morsi's removal and pushed for an early presidential election.
