MANAGUA - Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a message to President Daniel Ortega that he is satisfied with the development of bilateral ties, local media reported Wednesday.

Russia-Nicaragua ties are based on friendship and mutual respect and are developing successfully, Putin was quoted as saying in the message, delivered on the occasion of the 191st anniversary of Nicaragua's independence.

"I am convinced that joint efforts will bring us greater political dialogue and more cooperation in the fields of economy, trade, science and technology, and humanitarian matters," said the Russian leader.

Putin also said he is confident that the two countries can work together in resolving matters of regional and international interest.

"Undoubtedly, it is one of the main interests of the Russian and Nicaraguan people to consolidate stability and security in Latin America," he added.

Putin also praised Nicaragua's economic achievements, saying the prestige of the Central American country has grown substantially on the world stage.
