BANGKOK -- Thai anti-government protesters rallied outside the British Embassy in Bangkok Thursday morning to demand an extradition of Thai former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Thousands of protesters led by the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) started gathering outside the embassy at 9:30 am local time (0230 GMT) while a company of policemen were deployed to step up security.

The protesters blocked the traffic on a main road in Central Bangkok and distributed VCDs and documents to the pedestrians, blaming police's crackdowns on protesters on October 7.

Thailand's Supreme Court Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions pronounced on October 21 a two-year sentence on a land purchase scandal against ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra.

Thaksin was ousted in a September 2006 coup and is now in exile in Britain.

Two people died and nearly 500 others were injured during the day-long clashes between the police and demonstrators on October 7.
