TOKYO  -- The Japanese authorities have mobilized some 40,000 police in preparation for the upcoming Group of Eight (G8) summit, police officials said Wednesday.

Some 20,000 police officers have been dispatched to the venue of the Group of Eight (G8) summit at the Lake Toya (Toyako) and other areas in Hokkaidao, and 20,000 others to public locations such as train stations and crowded downtown areas in Tokyo, said officials from the National Police Agency.

Meanwhile, Defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba has ordered Japan's Self-Defense Forces to stay vigilant against terrorist attacks, including those aimed at the summit venue in particular.

Security measures will also be strengthened in Sapporo, where Chinese President Hu Jintao and South Korean President Lee Myung- Bak is to stay, police said.

Additional measures, such as the establishment of a no-fly zone within 46 km from the summit venue, have also been adopted, said the transport ministry.
