Karimov re-elected president of Uzbekistan(Xinhua)
Updated: 2007-12-29 16:36 ALMATY -- Uzbekistan's President Islam Karimov was re-elected with overwhelming support, reports from Tashkent said on Friday. Uzbekistan's Central Election Commission chief Mirzoulugbek Abdusalomov said Karimov garnered over 13 million, or 88.1 percent, of the votes to win Sunday's presidential election of the Central Asian country. Some 14.76 million voters cast their ballots, a high turnout of90.6 percent, the head of the electoral body said. Sunday's election, which pitted the incumbent president against three other candidates, was supervised by nearly 300 international observers from over 30 countries and five international organizations as well as 23,000 domestic observers. Karimov won the previous election in 2000, also with a landslide victory. |
