Islamabad -- Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf Tuesday said that the general election would be free and fair and be held on Jan. 8, 2008.

Inaugurating the Sialkot International Airport in the eastern Punjab city, Musharraf said holding of election, maintaining economic upsurge and countering terrorism were the three major issues confronting the country.

Musharraf was quoted by Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) as saying that free, fair and transparent general election would be held as per schedule on Jan. 8, 2008. Musharraf asked the nation to get ready for the forthcoming election.

There was a vital need to maintain the economic upsurge to ensure that its gains continue to reach out to the lowest tiers, he said.

Terming terrorism a "cancer," Musharraf said that it had to be defeated at all costs, otherwise it could seriously damage the country.

He also expressed concern over the escalating prices of wheat and said owing to the lowest prices in the region, the produce was fetching higher places in neighboring countries and was being smuggled.

The political activities related to the general election have gained momentum after Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz announced to contest the election on Monday. However, some component parties of All Parties Democratic Movement, an opposition alliance, still remain steadfast in their stance of boycotting the election.
