JAKARTA -- A 6.0-magnitude earthquake hit the Java island in central Indonesia Sunday morning, but there was no threat of a tsunami and no immediate report of damage, said the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency.

The quake struck at 06:01 Jakarta time (2301GMT Saturday) with the epicenter located at 78 km southeast Ujung Kulon of West Java province and 32 km under sea bed, an official of the agency, Jajat Jatmika, told Xinhua.

"We did not issue any tsunami warning," he said.

In December 2004, over 170,000 people were killed after a tsunami triggered by a strong quake devastated Indonesia's Aceh province and other coastal areas of Southeast Asian countries.

Indonesia sits on a vulnerable quake belt, the so-called "Pacific Ring of Fire," where two continental plates meet that cause frequent seismic and volcanic movement.
