Forty years ago, three young men－Asheng, Arong and Ajia－who come to apprentice at a private iron factory in Taipei all take a fancy to Aling (actress Kay Huang), the niece of a neighboring noodle shop boss (actress Mei-hsiu Lin). None of the men feel loved by her, but they try to behave well to win her affection. The most dramatic storyline is that iron factory boss sexually assaults Aling, and Arong angrily kills the boss and is sentenced to nine years in prison. Aling gives birth to a child, but worries about being an unmarried mother and the target of other people's ugly gossip. Aling and Ajia then become a legal couple. Asheng writes letters to the imprisoned Arong in the name of Aling, giving him encouragement. Years later, when these people encounter each other again, they reveal their inner feelings and secrets.
