SCU principal receives UNUK doctorate

Xie Heping, principal of Sichuan University, receives an honorary Doctor of Science degree from Yang Fujia, chancellor of the University of Nottingham at Nottingham's Ningbo campus.
Xie Heping, principal of Sichuan University, was presented an honorary Doctor of Science degree from the University of Nottingham UK (UNUK) due to his outstanding contributions to the research, practice and education in the field of rock mechanics and mine engineering.
Xie received the honor from Yang Fujia, chancellor of the University of Nottingham, on Nov 17 on the university's Ningbo campus.
"He is a world leader in damage mechanics of fractured rock masses and its mining applications. He has been at the forefront of research and practice in this important field for three decades," said Yu Haisui, vice-chancellor of the University of Nottingham at the awards ceremony.
"This honor is recognition for my past academic dedications and an inspiration for my future scientific research," said Xie in his thank you address.
Xie has been principal of Sichuan University since June 2003. Over the years, he has been a strong supporter of research and teaching collaboration with the University of Nottingham.
