To help, or not to help?

MisterPanda (France)

Last year, I was driving my scooter and saw a woman lying on the ground and stopped to help her. She was very kind and nice but some people, who hadn't seen what had happened, came to check what was going on and started to accuse me of hitting her with my scooter. Some even wanted to call the police. The woman told them to go to hell and I finally got her back to her home. When I told my wife the story, she was very upset and told me about the risk of being sued for being nice. I told her I would always try to help people to the best of my ability because this is what makes us human -- the ability to care for a stranger. Unfortunately, this story shows that I understand how Chinese are becoming indifferent, especially in big cities, since no one wants to risk being sued over a nice gesture.

To help, or not to help?

To help, or not to help? To help, or not to help? To help, or not to help?
What surprised you the most in China? Should Chinese care about "face"? Laowai, is the term offensive?
