理性救災 (Li xing jiu zai): Rational relief work

China Daily | Updated: 2013-04-26 08:17

A devastating earthquake struck Ya'an city in Southwest China's Sichuan province on April 20, at least 196 people were killed, 21 are still missing and 11,470 were injured, according to the official announcement on April 23.

The quake immediately sparked Chinese people's volunteering spirit. People flooded into the disaster-hit areas hoping to help. Instead, they caused roadblocks, which combined with aftershocks and landslides, added to the difficulties facing the professional rescue workers, who need to make the most of the first 72 hours after a quake, as most survivors are found within this "golden" period.

However, the authorities soon had things organized and stressed that saving lives was the priority at this time. Chinese Web users launched an online campaign "rational relief work", calling for the public to make rational efforts to help.

Although people's enthusiasm and love are appreciated, huge numbers of inexperienced people rushing to the quake sites only adds to the problems. People should remember that they can also contribute by donating goods and funds, and offering assistance during the post-quake reconstruction.
