Comments on "Audiences not to blame" (March 9, China Daily)

Going to a movie in China is a painful experience. Not only are the local films always the same...kung fu, Japanese invasion, war lords fighting against each other...the theaters are uncomfortable, poor audio and video quality, and the audience spend more time talking on their cell phones or to each other than watching. Prices are a rip off.

Today, few Chinese films are admired because, if the overseas audiences want to see Western-style movies, they might as well turn to Hollywood.

Contemporary Chinese movie makers have much more money than those of the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, but no heart: their movies are not grounded in the Chinese people's lives and traditions. The article is right that film-makers are missing the boat when they imitate the West: use Western film techniques but stress our own culture and traditions. Then the audiences will appear, slowly, but surely.
