Jilin officials respond to Tibetan disaster relief

When an 8.1-magnitude earthquake hit the neighboring Nepal and the Tibet autonomous region, on April 25, a group of 54 officials from Jilin province working in the region got organized quickly to extend aid to the quake-hit counties.
The Jilin officials were sent to Tibet autonomous region to help with economic development and ethnic solidarity work under a cadre-aid program that the central government started in 1995.
The quake killed more than 2,400 and injured another 5,000 in Nepal, while the death toll in Tibet was 20 but another 300,000 people were affected in the disaster, according to the latest reports.
Infrastructure of the area around the city of Shigatse was seriously damaged, with communications base stations and power affected. The Jilin personnel joined colleagues in arranging an emergency response in the rescue work, helping relocate locals and foreign visitors, delivering relief supplies, and providing medical aid to the injured.
In this latest effort, they were assisted by other officials in rescue efforts in Dinggyê county and Saga county.
