How is life in Gansu for foreigners?

As a province with astonishing scenic spots and sites such as Mogao Grottoes, Gansu has attracted many foreign friends to visit, study and settle down.

Here are stories of foreigners in Northwest China's Gansu province.

Hin Wong, from the United Kingdom, is able to make delicious Lanzhou hand-pulled beef noodles after a month's study in Lanzhou city, capital of Gansu province.

Twenty-six years old, he is a general manager of a restaurant in Swansea. He was born in Wales where his father, a well-known Chinese cuisine chef, owns a restaurant. [Full story]

The US conservationist devotes to restoring relics in NW China

Fourteen doctors from Ukraine learned about Kongtong's martial arts at Pingliang city in Northwest China's Gansu province on Dec 29.

With roots in Taoism, Kongtong's martial arts focuses on improving physical fitness and increasing inner energy. It was named after the Kongtong Mountains, Gansu province, where the practice is based. [Full story]

As the only foreigner working in Shandan, a remote county in Gansu province between the Gobi Desert and the Tibetan-Qinghai Plateau, Michael Forde occasionally feels isolated from his New Zealand home.
But Forde, who volunteered to teach English at Bailie Vocational School for a year, needs only to think about the school's colorful history to realize his roots are all around him. [Full story]

Jin Dongqin, from South Korea, prepares the protective clothing for her taekwondo students every day at her gymnasium in Lanzhou.

There are 20 students in the class and Jin is both owner and tutor at the gymnasium.

"Due to my husband’s business, I came with him to Lanzhou in 2015," Jin said. She is 40 years old and has two sons and a daughter.?[Full story]

Aihua smiled and walked with a model's gait along the stage holding her wine elegantly.

Aihua is a Russian student and part-time model in Lanzhou, capital of Gansu province. Aihua is her Chinese name. She models in her spare time.

"Lanzhou has a large demand for foreign models, who can get higher salary than others," said Aihua. [Full story]

"I find Gansu's long history and splendid culture are amazing," said Daniel Boone, a 27-year-old Canadian tour guide in Gansu province.
Daniel came to Peking University in 2006 to study archaeology. "Gansu's culture and history give me the sense of belonging, and among all the cities in Gansu, I like Dunhuang most for its Mogao Grottoes and interesting historical stories," he said. [Full story]
