Public bicycle rentals contribute to air quality in Lanzhou

The total number of people renting public bicycles in Lanzhou, the capital of Northwest China's Gansu, had risen to 20.09 million by Nov 25, the Lanzhou Public Traffic Group announced on Nov 30.

According to the national transport ministry formula, Lanzhou's use of public bicycles resulted in a reduction of 3,467.90 tons of carbon dioxide emission.

Lanzhou city launched the public bicycle renting system in 2014 in order to ease traffic jams and cut air pollution. The project has achieved excellent results with an increasing number of residents adopting the new way of commuting.

Residents between 12 and 70 years old (not include 70 years old) can all rent public bicycles using their resident or public transportation IC cards.

When applying for the public bicycle renting service, one needs to show valid identification at a public transport service outlet and credit a 300 yuan ($46.89) integrity deposit to one's transportation IC card.
