With an investment of 1.13 billion yuan ($177.41 million) and a construction period of three and a half years, the Haitan Strait Bridge in Pingtan Island, Fujian province, went into trial operation on Nov. 30, 2010.

As an important transportation route for Pingtan, the bridge is vital to the island's economic and social development. Located near Taiwan, the bridge also plays an important role in promoting interaction between Taiwan and the mainland.
