Port authorities in Fujian province have ordered all ports to step up preventive and control measures against Ebola virus, Fujian Daily reported on Aug 19.

The killer virus has been spreading in West Africa. The number of Ebola cases in Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone has reached 2,240, and a total of 1,229 deaths were also registered as of Aug 20, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Fujian has communications in personnel and cargo with the four countries, and therefore must establish a strict and efficient work mechanism making sure Ebola virus does not sneak in and result in severe consequences, said the newspaper.

The provincial inspection and quarantine department has worked with the health department to share information on prevention and control of the virus. It has also collaborated with border police and departments of commerce, tourism and education to look into information regarding people entering Fujian from countries with Ebola cases reported in the past three weeks.

Apart from regular body temperature checkups, the inspection and quarantine bureau will also carry out hygiene examination on all sorts of products from those countries, including transportation tools, containers, cargo, luggage and parcels.

Fujian has not opened regular air or sea routes to Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone, the newspaper said. From March to July, only seven people from the four countries entered Fujian by plane, it added.
