Taiwan artist creates a scene

Landscapes are a favorite subject for Chiang Ming-hsien, a renowned Taiwan artist of colored-ink paintings.

Over the past decades, he has traveled extensively seeking inspiration and material for his critically acclaimed art.

Some of these works, including a 20-meter scroll recording scenery along the Fuchun River in eastern Zhejiang province which took a year to complete, are on show at his latest solo show at the National Museum of China.

Chiang was born in 1942 in Taiwan but he insists his roots are in the mainland as his ancestors, known as the Hakka people, once lived in Yongding, Fujian province, and later moved further south and crossed the Taiwan Straits.

Chiang is widely considered to be one of the most representative artists of the contemporary Taiwan art scene and has a strong global influence.

In July 1989, Chiang held solo shows in Beijing and Shanghai after being invited to do so by the Ministry of Culture, becoming the first Taiwan artist to stage art shows in the mainland since 1949. Since then, Chiang has actively engaged in cross-Straits cultural exchanges.

9 am-5 pm, closed on Mondays and public holidays, Aug 28-Sept 8. National Museum of China, 16 East Chang'an Dajie, Dongcheng district, Beijing. 010-6511-6400.
