繼2003年中國古琴、昆曲被列入第一批"人類口頭和非物質文化遺產"項目之后，2005年新疆木卡姆藝術以及蒙古族長調又雙雙被聯合國教科文組織宣布為第三批"人類口頭和非物質遺產代表作"。一時間，"非物質文化遺產"概念開始進入公眾的視野，許多珍貴的民間傳統文化也相繼"浮出水面"。經過半年多的緊張籌備，中國"非物質文化遺產"保護成果展于2006年2月12日在中國國家博物館隆重開幕。

報道中的intangible cultural heritage就是"非物質文化遺產"。Intangible意味"something that
cannot be perceived by the senses（無形的東西，尤其是感覺不到的資產），舉個通俗的例子：The intangible
value of love lies in the mutual trust（愛情中最無形的價值在于雙方互相信任）。
Heritage指"something that is passed down from preceding
generations；especially a tradition（由前輩傳下來的東西，尤強調傳統），如We Chinese have a
rich heritage of folklore（我們擁有豐富的民間文學）。
