U.S. wants TV producer to face murder charge in Mexico

U.S. prosecutors on Monday filed court papers to send a former "Survivor" television producer to Mexico to stand trial for murder in the death of his Brazilian wife, according to court papers.

The extradition request for Bruce Beresford-Redman, filed in a federal court in Los Angeles, comes less than three months after police arrested him at his Southern California home.

No hearing dates have been set in the extradition request, and the U.S. attorney's office declined further comment.

Mexican authorities accuse Beresford-Redman of strangling his wife, Monica, in April 2010 in the resort city of Cancun while the couple was on vacation with their two children.

Shortly after his wife's death, Mexican authorities seized Beresford-Redman's passport and ordered him to stay in Mexico while they investigated. But he returned to the United States and later declared himself innocent.

In May, a Mexican judge issued an arrest warrant for Beresford-Redman, which eventually led to U.S. authorities arresting him and filing Monday's extradition request.

The TV program "Survivor" was one of the first reality competition shows to gain massive popularity when it came out in 2000. Beresford-Redman is listed as a producer or senior producer on dozens of episodes between 2002 and 2004.
