Cinema's ultimate "man's man" James Bond also made an appearance in the guise of actor Daniel Craig who came sixth.

David wasn't the only sports star to make the list. Tennis powerhouse Roger Federer was fourth, while Formula 1 sensation Lewis Hamilton, 22, finished in ninth position.

The top 49 men were selected from a shortlist of 100 "ambassadors of male-kind" also nominated by AskMen.com readers.

James Bassil, the website's editor-in-chief, said: "The Top 49 list is unique among celebrity rankings in that it is created by our AskMen.com readers, rather than a stable of editors. This allows us to get a true sense of today's most respected male role models across industries such as entertainment, sports and technology."
