National flood danger defused: report
(Xinhua)
Updated: 2004-08-02 21:12

The water levels of all of China's rivers have receded below their warning lines, a flood situation report from the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters said Monday.

On Sunday, only the Mabian River, a tributary in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, rose above its warning line by 0.73 meter with a flow of 1,400 cubic meters per second. But since then the river has waned.

According to the report, no heavy rainfall occurred across the country on Aug. 1-2. Many regions including Sichuan, Hubei, Anhui, Zhejiang, Fujian, Shaanxi, Henan, Jiangsu, Tibet, Yunnan, Chongqing, Guangxi, Jilin and Heilongjiang only reported precipitation of 10-25 millimeters.

Given that more rain will come in the Yellow and Huaihe River Valleys, the headquarters called on relevant departments to keep alert to changing flood situations so that no severe damages would happen during the main flood season supposed to end in mid-August.

No statistics related to the year's flood losses have been disclosed.
