Two killed, 53 missing in mudflow in Yunnan
(Xinhua)
Updated: 2004-07-21 14:40

Two people were killed and three were seriously injured in a landslide and mudflow in an ethnic area in southwest China's Yunnan Province on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, 53 people were reported missing after a landslide and mudflow occurred at Yingjiang County of the Dai-Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture of Dehong.

The mudflow washed away 49 people at the Lushan, Zhidong and Nongpo villages Tuesday morning. Four more added to the missing list that evening.

Two rescue teams consisting of servicemen, armed police and medical workers have arrived at the disaster-hit areas. The local government has shipped large amounts of plastic bags, garments, quilts and food to the victims.

However, people have to physically carry relief materials to the area, because roads leading to the affected villages had been blocked.

To date, 747 people in 248 households in the affected areas have been evacuated.
