Over 200,000 tourists came to Beijing Saturday, the first day of the May Day holiday week.

The popular tourist sites such as the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace and the Great Wall, reported a moderate flow of tourists, the municipal government told Xinhua.

Some 48,000 tourists visited the Forbidden City while 24,000 went to the Summer Palace, the government source said.

The star hotels had an average 58 percent of occupancy while ordinary hotels had 43 percent and inns in suburbs 65 percent, the source said.

The municipal tourism bureau sent ten inspection teams to major tourist sites Saturday to check their security facilities, service and sanitation. No big problem was found, the source said.

The city's public health administration also inspected 749 restaurants and snack bars at tourist sites, of which 712 passed the check. The rest failed mainly because a few of their employees did not have the certificates of health.

The hot line of the government office received 92 calls for consultation and none for serious complaint Saturday, the government source said
