37 trapped in coal mine explosion
(Xinhua)
Updated: 2004-02-23 15:47

A gas explosion in a coal mine has left 37 miners trapped since early Monday in Jixi City, northeast China's Heilongjiang Province.

The blast occurred at 6:10 a.m. at the Baixing Coal Mine, under the Jixi Municipal Mining Group, sources with the provincial production safety department and the Jixi municipal government said.

Rescuers are still unable to enter the coal mine because of poisonous gas.

The cause of the explosion is under investigation.
