Ningxia ready for games
( 2003-08-18 10:04) (chinadaily.com.cn)

Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region is ready for the seventh Ethnic Minorities Traditional Sports Games scheduled to be held September 6-11 in the region, said Feng Ming, publicity chief of the Games' organizing committee.

The emblem of the Games
The construction of the venues and the athletes' village has completed and they will put into operation several days later, according to Ma.

The Games, the first in the new century, will gather 3,789 athletes and more than 600 referees across the country.

The Games include 14 competitive events and 124 exhibition ones, featuring the characteristics of the traditional sports of various ethnic minorities.

As exchanges between different ethnic groups during the 6-day period are the main purpose of the Games, there will be no official gold tally; but the winners of each event will be awarded medals.

The main venues of the Games are in Yinchuan, capital city of the autonomous region and some events will be held in Shazuishan and Shahu near Yinchuan.

Mascot of the Games
The Games will draw 548 journalists from across the country. China Central Television will live broadcast the opening ceremony and some of the events.

Large-scale art performance will be staged in the opening ceremony, with 8,000 people taking part in the performance.

The First Ethnic Minorities Traditional Sports Games was held in Tianjin in 1953; the second in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in 1982; the third in Xinjiang Ugur Autonomous Region in 1986; the fourth in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in 1991; the fifth in Yunnan Province in 1995 and the sixth in Beijing and Tibet Autonomous Region in 1999.
