UEFA to scrap golden goal deciders
( 2002-04-24 10:51 ) (7 )

The controversial golden goal rule will be scrapped in next season's major club competitions, UEFA said on its website on Tuesday.

The governing body of European football will introduce a new extra time format for the finals of the UEFA Cup and the Champions League after consulting some of Europe's coaches who felt the golden goal law was unfair.

If the finals of UEFA's prestige club competitions end in a draw, 15 minutes of extra time will be played, followed by another 15 minutes if the scores are still level.

A penalty shoot-out will decide the match if extra time does not produce a winner.

The golden goal rule, where a match is settled by the first score in extra time, decided the European Championship finals in England in 1996 and the Netherlands in 2000 -- Germany and France being the teams to benefit.

Liverpool also won last season's UEFA Cup final with a golden goal against Spanish club Alaves.
