Beijing said on Thursday that it hopes the situation in Algeria can be handled properly.

"China is paying great attention to the safety and interests of Chinese people and agencies overseas, and Chinese embassies in Mali and Algeria will provide assistance and protection in all aspects to them," Hong Lei, spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said at a news conference.

China at the same time urges the governments of relevant countries to provide protection for Chinese citizens and ensure their safety and the security of their properties, the spokesman said.
