Technological help for developing countries

By Lan Lan | China Daily | Updated: 2011-11-22 07:55

BEIJING - China will provide more energy conservation and renewable-energy technologies to developing countries as it steps up South-South Cooperation.

Xie Zhenhua, vice-chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), said on Monday that China will provide more technical support to help other developing countries cope with climate change.

China will invest in the construction of hydropower stations and solar projects in developing countries and help developing island states establish trash disposal plants, Xie said.

China will also provide agricultural technologies in the areas of drought resistance, water conservation, biodiversity protection and sustainable forestry operations.

The nation will also help countries that often experience extreme weather to set up forecasting and warning systems.

The Ministry of Finance and the NDRC have set up a special fund for international cooperation in addressing climate change, said Zeng Xiaoan, a finance ministry official.

Xie commented during a climate change training seminar hosted by the NDRC on Monday. About 45 officials from 26 small island states, the African Union and least-developed countries attended the seminar.

China plans to train about 1,000 climate change officials and experts in developing countries in the next three years, he said.
