Xinhua | Updated: 2016-12-26 21:05

BEIJING -- China's National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center on Monday issued a yellow alert for ocean waves brought by Typhoon Nock-Ten and a cold front.

Starting early morning on Tuesday, Nock-Ten, the 26th typhoon this year, and the cold front are expected to bring waves of 3.5-5 meters in the East China Sea as well as waters surrounding the Diaoyu Islands, Taiwan Strait, northern areas of the South China Sea and Bashi Strait, according to the center.

Waves of 5-7 meters are expected in the central and eastern areas of the South China Sea.

The center also issued a blue alert for ocean waves expected in waters off the coasts of Zhejiang, Fujian and Guangdong provinces.

In China's four-tier severe weather warning system, red is the most serious alert, followed by orange, yellow and blue.
