Major upcoming meeting for cross-Straits relations

Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, meets with Lien Chan, honorary chairman of the KMT, at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, Sept 1, 2015. Nov 7 will see Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, meet with Ma Ying-jeou, Taiwan's leader in Singapore, during Xi's visit to the country.

The meeting draws much attention from home and abroad, not only because it will be the first meeting of two leaders from the two sides since the Chinese civil war (1946-1949), but also because the two sides will exchange views on promoting the peaceful development of cross-straits relations in the face of the upcoming Taiwan leadership election.

Starting from the ice-breaking visit from Lien Chan, then chairman of the Kuomintang (KMT) in April 29, 2005, the Chinese mainland and Taiwan have achieved many important results such as direct cross-Straits transport and postal services thanks to major meetings held in the last ten years.
