Guangdong to reward terror informants up to half million RMB

GUANGZHOU - Police in south China's Guangdong province will offer rewards up to half a million yuan ($80,000) for those who give information about terrorist attacks, terror suspects and their funding activities, the police said on Sunday.

Rewards will be made according to the value of the information in preventing terrorist attacks or catching suspects.

Police will also offer rewards to those who provide tips on illegal activities related to preaching extremism and making videos or books that teach terrorist attacks.

Guangdong police have so far arrested three fugitives and confiscated terrorist materials based on tips.

China's Ministry of Public Security last month announced a nationwide scheme that would offer substantial rewards for those who give information in the "people's war" against terrorism.

The ministry promised to protect informants, and police officers will be punished if informants come to any harm.

The move comes after a series of terrorist attacks in China in recent months. On May 22, 39 people were killed in a terrorist attack in Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. On April 30, three people were killed and 79 injured at a railway station in Urumqi. In March, assailants killed 29 civilians and injured another 143 at a railway station in Kunming, capital of southwest China's Yunnan Province.
