Urbanites warn of terror threat

By He Dan (chinadaily.com.cn) Updated: 2014-03-28 20:03

There is broad consensus among urban residents that terrorism will be a long-term threat for China and that the government should increase military spending on security, according to a survey released on March 28.

Some 81 percent of 2,000 respondents think terrorism will threaten China in the long run, while 14 percent do not think so and the remaining 5 percent feel uncertain about the situation.

The Canton Public Opinion Research Center in Guangzhou polled 2,000 people living in urban areas in 27 cities nationwide, including Beijing and Tianjin. It said all findings were based on random phone interviews and all respondents were aged 16 and over.

Seven out of every 10 respondents believe territorial disputes will pose another threat for China.

Seventy-three percent of those polled said they support China increasing its military spending substantially, while only 14 percent were opposed to this.
