A former traffic policeman in Fengtai county, Anhui province, who allegedly concealed himself in the police team after killing a man when dealing with a traffic accident 20 years ago, has been arrested, Hefei-based Shichang Xingbao newspaper said on Friday.

Jin Kai, the former policeman, shot dead three-wheeler driver Kang Xiaoqun from the neighboring Mengcheng county following a traffic accident on Aug 5, 1993.

It was reported that Kang’s three-wheeler was hit by a truck and killed a villager towing a handcart.

When Fengtai police looked for Kang in Mengcheng, he tried to escape.

Jin allegedly killed him with four shots.

Jin was detained by Mengcheng police on charges of intentional assault the following week but was released four days later. He then disappeared.

In February 1995, the Mengcheng county procuratorate filed a warrant to arrest Jin of intentional homicide, but local police did not catch him.

He was listed as a wanted suspect online in 2001.

On June 13, Mengcheng police finally caught Jin in Beijing. Police found that he had changed his name and had been receiving a salary from the Fengtai county traffic police team without working for 20 years.

The case is still under investigation.
