Shenzhen to impose heavy fine on jaywalkers

By Zheng Caixiong in Guangzhou | chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: 2013-05-14 15:06

Jaywalkers will be fined up to 100 yuan ($16) in the Shenzhen special economic zone, Guangdong province, from May 23.

"It is the largest fine for jaywalkers so far on the Chinese mainland," said Li Guangqun, division chief of traffic police under Shenzhen bureau of public security.

Jaywalkers who do not pay will be recorded in official files, Li told a press conference in Shenzhen on Monday.

"Those who refuse to pay the fine will not allowed to apply for a driver's license, or have their vehicles undergo annual checks," Li said.

The traffic police will also inform educational departments and schools, he added.

According to an online survey conducted by local traffic police, more than 85 percent of netizens are in favor of imposing fines of 100 yuan on jaywalkers.

The online survey interviewed a total of 11,361 netizens earlier this month.
